The programme
Yes — 100%. All lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions, assessments, examinations and official communications are conducted in English. You do not need to know any Greek to complete the programme, though you will certainly pick some up living in Thessaloniki.
Yes. The Bachelor in Sport & Exercise Sciences for Health and Performance is jointly delivered by the AUTh School of Physical Education and Sport Science at Thessaloniki (the leading school) and the School at Serres. Teaching is shared across both schools, and you will have access to faculty and laboratories at both campuses.
Forty students per academic year. This is a deliberately small cohort — designed to ensure close contact with faculty, full access to laboratory resources, and a genuinely personalised academic experience.
Yes. AUTh is a public university of the Greek state, and its degrees are fully recognised across the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). The bachelor is accredited at EQF Level 6 — automatically recognised for academic and professional purposes across all EU member states and in most countries worldwide that have signed mutual recognition agreements with the EU.
The first cohort begins in September 2026. There is one intake per year, in September. The academic year runs from September to June, divided into two semesters.
At the start of year 4. Years 1–3 are common to all students — anatomy, biomechanics, physiology, motor learning, training science, sport medicine, research methods. The split into Pathway A (Exercise for Health & Rehabilitation) or Pathway B (Sport Performance) happens at the start of the fourth year. You don't need to declare a preference when applying.
Admissions & applications
A valid passport or national ID, official secondary school transcripts, your secondary school leaving certificate, an English language certificate (if applicable), and a personal statement of 500–800 words. No. There is no application fee. You only pay tuition once you have received and confirmed your offer.
We operate a rolling review. Applications are reviewed in the order they are received. Early applications are reviewed first — and because places fill quickly for a first intake, we strongly encourage applying as soon as your documents are ready.
Some applicants will be invited to a short online interview as part of the review process. Interviews are conducted in English by members of the admissions committee, and typically last 20–30 minutes. We will give you reasonable notice and let you choose from several time slots.
Deferrals are considered on a case-by-case basis. If you have received an offer but cannot start in September 2026, contact our admissions team as soon as possible to discuss whether deferral to September 2027 is possible.

Life in Thessaloniki
Most students rent private apartments — Thessaloniki has a large, student-friendly rental market with options ranging from shared apartments (€250–350/month) to studios (€350–500/month). AUTh also offers limited student residence places. Our admissions team helps you plan accommodation before arrival.
Thessaloniki is one of the most affordable major European cities. A comfortable student budget — rent, food, transport, utilities, occasional travel — sits around €500–700 per month. This is significantly lower than equivalent cities in Western Europe.
For your studies, no — the entire programme is in English. For daily life, no — most younger people in Thessaloniki speak good English, and the university supports international students with day-to-day administrative tasks. You will likely pick up basic Greek over four years simply by being in the city, but it is not required.
Yes. Thessaloniki consistently ranks among the safer cities in Europe by international crime statistics. It is a large university town with a very high student population, and the campus and surrounding areas are well-served by public transport and student services.
