Bringing science to society: measuring health through movement.
Sport science reaches its true value when it extends beyond the university and engages directly with society. As part of its outreach activities, the School of Physical Education and Sport Science — one of the two schools that jointly deliver the Bachelor in Sport & Exercise Sciences for Health and Performance — participated in the International Fair, one of the largest public events in Greece, with an initiative designed to promote health awareness through physical activity.
Located at Pavilion 17, Stand 5, the team created an interactive experience for visitors, aiming to inform and sensitise the general population about the critical role of physical activity in maintaining and improving health.
Real impact.
Through live functional assessments and direct interaction, citizens experienced how scientific evaluation can translate into practical, everyday health improvement.
At the core of the initiative were live, on-site functional assessments. Citizens had the opportunity to participate in simple yet scientifically grounded measurements of key physical indicators — including balance, upper-body strength, and overall functional capacity.
Using accessible and user-friendly equipment, the team translated scientific evaluation into an engaging, real-world experience. Beyond the measurements, participants received immediate qualitative feedback along with practical guidance on how to incorporate physical activity into their daily routines.
This direct interaction empowered individuals to better understand their physical condition and take actionable steps toward improving their health.
Bridging academic knowledge with public engagement
The initiative was led by Professor Nikolaos Koutlianos, highlighting the school's commitment to bridging academic knowledge with public engagement.
Through actions like this, the School demonstrates that sport is not confined to performance or competition — it is a vital tool for prevention, education, and well-being, one that can positively impact everyday life.
At the School of Physical Education and Sport Science, we actively bring science closer to people — using sport as a means to inform, empower, and ultimately improve quality of life.
